What is Catnip?
Catnip plant is a herb from the mint family also known as catmint or nepeta cataria. It is native to Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Catnip has a distinctive smell that attracts cats it can affect cats in different ways. Catnip is a natural mood enhancer.
- They can become more affectionate
- They can become full of energy and run around a lot
- They can become more relaxed and chilled out just staring or grooming themselves
How long does the effect last?
The effect of catnip doesn’t last for very long, just between 5-15 minutes. Once they have been exposed to it, it’ll take a while for the effects to work again, probably about an hour.
Why give it my cat?
Cats love it. It’s great fun for them and for us to watch them! It can also be used as training aids to encourage them to do something e.g. use a scratching post. Cats see this as a treat and a reward for doing well.
How do I give Catnip to my cat?
Catnip comes in various forms including a spray form or crushed, fried form.
It also can come in a toy to encourage play.
How much can I give my cat?
Cats only need a pinch or two of Catnip for it to have an effect on them.
If too much is given it can cause a mild tummy upset.
Is Catnip safe?
Catnip is completely safe and is not addictive.
Does Catnip affect all cats?
Catnip doesn’t always work on every cat. Some cats aren’t affected by it.
Kittens become affected from 4 months onwards once their senses are fully developed.
