How to tell if your dog is overweight?
You can often tell if your dog’s overweight just by looking. Is there a clear waistline when viewed from above and the side. Sometimes it’s tricky to tell so we recommend using the PFMA body condition table http://www.pfma.org.uk/petometer.html.
How often do I have to weigh my dog?
Most vets offer free check-ups that include weighing your dog. It may help to weigh your dog once a month or once every few months to keep tabs on his weight.
Why is my dog overweight?
There may be many reasons why a dog has gained too much weight:
- It may be down to eating too much.
- You may be feeding it the wrong amount of food or too many doggy treats.
- Age and illness make your dog less active so it may not be burning up as many calories. It could be the medication they are receiving may aid weight gain such as steroids.
- Your dog may not be getting enough exercise; some breeds need anything up to two hours of vigorous exercise every day!
- Also, some breeds like Labradors and King Charles spaniels have the so-called “fat gene” and are prone to putting on weight, so you may have to be extra vigilant with these breeds and be strong in resisting those pleading puppy like eyes!
Why is being overweight bad for my dog?
They are potentially at risk from mobility problems, heart problems, diabetes, difficulty breathing as well as bone and joint pain.
Canine obesity can also affect coat and skin health. Surgery involving anesthesia becomes more risky.
A dog needs to be fit for life and a heavy dog gets old before his time, which isn’t fair on your dog and isn’t nice for you as an owner.
How long should I feed Butcher’s Lean & Tasty?
Butcher’s Lean & Tasty is a complete meal and can be fed long term, every day, to keep your dog fit and healthy. How much you feed will depend which diet regime you are following; the weight management or weight maintenance feeding regimes.
How much should I feed my dog?
It depends on the breed, their activity level and the life stage your dog is at. Some pets need to eat more than others. The feeding guidelines on the packaging are to be used as a guide only, and should adjusted to achieve a healthy steady weight.
What does L-Carnitine do?
L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid (building block that makes protein) that helps to burn fat and guard against weight gain.
Will my dog be hungry if only fed Butcher’s Lean & Tasty?
Going on a diet requires a change in eating habits and for some this could mean, particularly initially, that the feeling of hunger maybe present. The feeding guides for Lean & Tasty are based upon a healthy weight of an adult dog having an hour of exercise a day and so should be the right amount of food for majority of dogs.
We have developed Butcher’s Lean & Tasty so that you can simply switch ‘can for can’ or ‘foil tray for foil tray’ so your dog will be eating the same quantity as before but getting 30% less fat. Always, refer to the feeding guide for guidance and your vet’ will also be happy to advise how much to feed.
When should I switch to the maintenance programme?
Once your dog has reached its ideal weight for its breed or size and are within the ideal weight section of the body conditioning score http://www.pfma.org.uk/petometer.html you should switch to the maintenance programme.
How long will it take to see a difference?
It depends how much weight your dog has to lose and how much exercise they receive. Feeding only Butcher’s Lean & Tasty you’ll see a difference faster. Remember you are doing this for your dog’s health so stay strong and don’t give in to puppy dog eyes with treats.
What else can I do to help my dog lose weight?
Increasing your dog’s activity levels will not only help them burn more calories and get fitter but will also help occupy them and get their minds off food! Weight loss for dogs is like weight loss for humans – if you move about more and have fewer calories you will lose weight!
Gently increase activity levels and always seek you vet’s advice if you have any concerns.
